Our initial involvement with RCM was when we were asked to design a fully sequential version of the Subaru Impreza 6 speed gearbox. The new gearbox was to be used in their new demonstration car the “Gobstopper”, which they were planning to use in a variety of events e.g “Time Attack” and “Ten of the best”. It was decided to use the already well proven outsourced geartrain and compliment it with our ultra quick and reliable sequential system.
We were then asked to do a geometry profile on ther car with a view to to producing aluminium uprites ,which would replace the standard cast steel ones and at the same time allow us to fully optimize the cars geometry. This was done in two stages, firstly the proposed geometry changes were achieved using modified existing parts , then track tested and refined. The second stage was to collate all the tried and tested information and then design and manufacture the billet aluminium front and rear uprites.
Weight saving on the car was a priority and with this in mind we were asked to design and maufacture complete Carbon fibre replacement doors. The enormity of this request was not taken lightly as the the “Gobstopper” is capable of almost 200 MPH and it uses frameless doors i.e the top of the door glass acts as a seal against the car, without a frame to stiffen the door, the doors themselves would need to be immensely strong to “clamp” the glass against the car.The doors when completed helped save almost 40 kgs
